Relationship between the temperature curve, relative humidity and the incidence of COVID 19 cases

Resumen

Objetivos: Describir y analizar la influencia de temperatura y humedad relativa en la transmisión del Covid-19 en Cantabria y comparar la incidencia de estas variables en tres ciudades españolas, Santander, Bilbao y Madrid. Método: estudio transversal descriptivo y analítico (correlación de Spearman) de las asociaciones entre la temperatura media y la humedad relativa media, cada una de manera independiente con la incidencia acumulada de casos confirmados Covid-19, ingresados en Unidad Cuidados Críticos (UCI), mortalidad del 1 al 10 de abril y su relación con la temperatura media y humedad media desde el 1 de marzo. Resultados: se observó relación positiva entre la incidencia acumulada de nuevos casos en Cantabria y la temperatura media desde el 01/04/2020 al 10/04/2020 (r=0,74), así como en las incidencias acumuladas de ingresados en UCI (r=0,74) y mortalidad (r=0,71). Visualmente se aprecia un solape de las curvas en las tres ciudades analizadas con un solape temporal de 14 días. Conclusiones: podría existir una relación entre la curva de temperatura en estas ciudades con la incidencia de casos a los 14 días sin olvidar la importancia del resto de medidas sanitarias, entre otras, el confinamiento, el distanciamiento social y las medidas de higiene

Abstract

Objectives: Describe and analyze the influence of temperature and relative humidity in the transmission of Covid-19 in Cantabria and compare the incidence of these variables in three Spanish cities, Santander, Bilbao and Madrid. Method: descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study (Spearman's correlation) of the associations between average temperature and average relative humidity, each independently with the cumulative incidence of confirmed Covid-19 cases admitted to the Critical Care Unit (ICU), mortality from April 1 to 10 and its relationship with the average temperature and average humidity since March 1. Results: a positive relationship was observed between the accumulated incidence of new cases in Cantabria and the mean temperature from 04/01/2020 to 04/10/2020 (r = 0.74), as well as in the accumulated incidences of admitted to ICU (r = 0.74) and mortality (r = 0.71). Visually there is an overlap of the curves in the three cities analyzed with a temporal overlap of 14 days. Conclusions: there could be a relationship between the temperature curve in these cities and the incidence of cases at 14 days without forgetting the importance of the rest of sanitary measures, among others, confinement, social distancing and hygienic measures
