Resumen

Introducción: En ocasiones se produce en los ancianos, una modificación en la conducta que da lugar a la agitación: una actividad motora o verbal inapropiada sin explicación causal. Se produce en un 70-90% de ancianos con demencia institucionalizados, la mitad de los cuales llegan a ser realmente agresivos. Ante esta situación existen diversos fármacos pero el uso de ellos puede dar lugar a efectos adversos. Objetivo: El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una revisión para averiguar cuáles son las estrategias no farmacológicas más eficaces para tratar la agitación en ancianos. Metodología: Se realiza una revisión narrativa usando las bases de datos de PubMed, Cinahl y Scopus. Se seleccionan los estudios realizados en los últimos cinco años, realizados en humanos, con texto completo y con una adecuada calidad metodológica. Resultados: Los resultados muestran que la musicoterapia y las técnicas de manejo conductual son las que más beneficios presentan. Pero también resultan eficaces las actividades ocupacionales, aromaterapia, ejercicio físico, acupresión y estimulación cognitiva. Conclusiones: Se debe promocionar el uso de las técnicas no farmacológicas como primera opción ofreciendo así a los ancianos los mejores cuidados basados en las últimas evidencias.

Abstract

Introduction: Occasionally there is a change in behavior in the elderly that leads to agitation: an inappropriate motor or verbal activity without a causal explanation. It occurs in 70-90% of elderly people with institutionalized dementia, half of whom become really aggressive. In this situation there are several drugs but the use of them can lead to adverse effects. Objective: The objective of this work is to carry out a review to find out which are the most effective non-pharmacological strategies to treat agitation in the elderly. Methodology: A narrative review is carried out using the PubMed, Cinahl and Scopus databases. The studies carried out in the last five years, carried out in humans, with full text and with an adequate methodological quality are selected. Results: The results show that music therapy and behavioral management techniques have the most benefits. But occupational activities, aromatherapy, physical exercise, acupressure and cognitive stimulation are also effective. Conclusions: The use of non-pharmacological techniques should be promoted as a first option, thus offering the elderly the best care based on the latest evidence.
