Resumen

Introducción: El 90-95% de los pacientes con trastorno del espectro autista padece un trastorno del procesamiento sensorial, que puede desembocar en alteraciones del comportamiento y dificultades en el desarrollo de las habilidades motoras. Se han desarrollado terapias como la Terapia de Integración Sensorial con resultados esperanzadores para estos pacientes, por lo que es necesario realizar más investigaciones con el fin de confirmar estos efectos. Objetivo: Conocer la eficacia de la Terapia de Integración Sensorial en las áreas de ocupación y/o la calidad de vida de niños con autismo. Metodología: Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en las bases de datos Medline, OTseeker, Cochrane y PEDro. Aplicando los criterios de inclusión y exclusión previamente definidos, se obtuvieron 8 artículos publicados entre 2008 y 2023, y todos ellos pasaron la evaluación metodológica CASPe. Resultados: Todos los estudios muestran efectos positivos en las áreas de ocupación de los pacientes tras la intervención con Terapia de Integración Sensorial, aunque estos cambios no siempre se consideran significativos. Conclusión: Se deben seguir realizando estudios con mayor muestra poblacional y mayor tiempo de tratamiento. Además de seguir investigando sobre el efecto de la Terapia de Integración Sensorial en pacientes de otras edades y con otras patologías del neurodesarrollo

Abstract

Introduction: 90-95% of patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder have a sensory processing disorder, which can lead to behavioral disturbances and difficulties in the development of motor skills. The usual treatment, such as medicines, is still important, but other therapies, for example, Sensory Integration Therapy, have been developed with encouraging results for these patients, and further research is needed to confirm these effects. Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of sensory integration therapy in the areas of occupation and quality of life in children with Austim Spectrum Disorder. Material and methods: The research of intervention studies was made in the Medline, OTseeker, Cochrane, and PEDro databases. Applying the previously defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 8 articles published between 2008 and 2023 were obtained, and all of them passed the CASPe methodological assessment. Results: All studies show positive effects on children’s occupation areas following an intervention with Sensory Integration Therapy, although these changes are not always considered significant. Conclusion: Studies with larger populations and longer treatment times should be continued. Further research into the effects of sensory integration therapy in patients of other ages and with other neurodevelopmental disorders is also considered appropriate
