Resumen

El Síndrome de Down (SD) afecta actualmente a más de 5,8 millones de personas en el mundo, las cuales han experimentado un notable aumento en su esperanza de vida, llegando a los 60 años. Sin embargo, con este logro surgen nuevos retos, ya que muchos desarrollarán Alzheimer de forma temprana, siendo esta la principal causa de muerte en esta población. Este estudio tiene como objetivo analizar la relación entre el SD y la Enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA), destacando el papel de los profesionales de enfermería. Para ello, se llevó a cabo una revisión sistemática de la literatura, analizando 14 estudios publicados en los últimos 5 años en bases de datos como PubMed. Los resultados evidencian la urgencia de optimizar los métodos de prevención y diagnóstico precoz. A pesar de los desafíos, los avances en vacunas y tecnologías diagnósticas ofrecen nuevas oportunidades para la detección temprana y el manejo eficaz de la enfermedad. La atención enfermera es esencial, desde la prevención y educación, hasta el acompañamiento en las últimas etapas de la vida, siempre con un enfoque integral y centrado en la dignidad del paciente

Abstract

Down syndrome (DS) currently affects more than 5.8 million people worldwide, who have experienced a significant increase in life expectancy, reaching 60 years1. However, with this achievement comes new challenges, as many will develop Alzheimer’s disease at an early age, which is the leading cause of death in this population2. This study aims to analyze the relationship between DS and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), highlighting the role of nursing professionals. To this end, a systematic review of the literature was conducted, analyzing 14 studies published in the last 5 years in databases such as PubMed. The results demonstrate the urgency of optimizing prevention and early diagnosis methods. Despite the challenges, advances in vaccines and diagnostic technologies offer new opportunities for early detection and effective management of the disease. Nursing care is essential, from prevention and education to support in the final stages of life, always with a comprehensive approach focused on the dignity of the patient
