Importance of the Ultrasound Machine for Nursing in Detecting the Refill Port of Intrathecal Analgesic Infusion Pumps: Research Project

Resumen

El abordaje del dolor es un tema que cobra relevancia por su complejidad. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la eficacia del uso del ecógrafo por profesionales de enfermería para localizar el portal de recarga de forma directa. El ecógrafo, al ser inocuo y permitir visualizar el portal con exactitud, se presenta como una alternativa más segura y precisa. El diseño metodológico es un estudio transversal pre-post en una cohorte de 45 pacientes portadores de dispositivos de flujo variable del HUVN de Granada. Se aplicarán ambas técnicas a cada paciente en visitas sucesivas, midiendo variables clave como el tiempo de intervención, el dolor (BPI y EVA), el grado de satisfacción (CRES-4) y las complicaciones. Se espera que la técnica ecoguiada sea más eficaz, rápida y segura, reduciendo el dolor del paciente por punciones fallidas y mejorando la calidad asistencial, lo que respaldaría su implementación en la práctica clínica de enfermería.

Abstract

The management of pain is a topic that gains relevance due to its complexity. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using the ultrasound machine by nursing professionals to directly locate the refill portal. The ultrasound machine, being harmless and allowing the portal to be visualized accurately, is presented as a safer and more precise alternative. The methodological design is a pre-post cross-sectional study in a cohort of 45 patients carrying variable flow devices from the HUVN of Granada. Both techniques will be applied to each patient in successive visits, measuring key variables such as intervention time, pain (BPI and EVA), degree of satisfaction (CRES-4), and complications. It is expected that the ultrasound-guided technique will be more effective, faster, and safer, reducing patient pain from failed punctures and improving the quality of care, which would support its implementation in clinical nursing practice.
