Resumen

Objetivo principal: evaluar la efectividad de una intervención de educación para la salud audiovisual en comparación con información escrita en términos de mejora de conocimientos sobre el correcto lavado de manos. Metodología: ensayo doble ciego y aleatorizado, con 80 participantes que fueron formados en la técnica correcta del lavado de manos a través de diferentes intervenciones educativas: vídeo educacional junto con un folleto escrito o solamente el folleto. Se evaluaron los conocimientos antes y después de la intervención. Resultados principales: ambos grupos mostraron una mejoría en el procedimiento, sobre todo en la duración, en el lavado circular de los pulgares y de la punta de los dedos. No se apreciaron diferencias significativas entre los distintos métodos, aunque los participantes mostraron preferencias por la formación audiovisual. Conclusión principal: una intervención comunitaria educativa, tanto audiovisual como escrita, mejora la técnica de lavado de manos pudiendo disminuir la transmisión comunitaria de infecciones respiratorias.

Abstract

Objective: Measure of the effectiveness of an audiovisual health education intervention compared to written information in terms of improving knowledge about the correct handwashing. Methods: Double-blind, randomized trial with 80 participants who were trained in the correct handwashing technique through different educational interventions: educational video together with a written leaflet or the leaflet alone. Knowledge was assessed before and after the intervention. Results: Both groups showed improvement in the technique especially in the duration and circular scrubbing around the thumbs and fingers tip. No significant differences were observed between the different methods, although participants showed preference for the audiovisual training. Conclusions: A community educational intervention, both audiovisual and written, improves handwashing techniques and can reduce community transmission of respiratory infections.
