Resumen

Objetivo principal: Determinar los conocimientos de las mujeres sobre el cribado de cáncer de cérvix en el Área Sanitaria de Ferrol. Metodolo-gía: Estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal sobre una muestra de 206 mujeres, mediante un cuestionario de 10 ítems sobre el cribado. Resultados principales: El 38,8% contestaron que la citología cervical servía para diagnosticar el cáncer de cérvix. Un 59,2% nunca recibieron información sobre el cribado. El 74,8% negaron que el cáncer de cérvix podía ser ocasionado por un enfermedad de transmisión sexual. La media de respuestas correctas fue de 1,85. Se observó que el haber recibido información está relacionado con conocer la utilidad del cribado (p=0,015) y considerar adecuado un intervalo de 3 años entre citologías (p=0,000). Conclusión principal: Los conocimientos de las mujeres de esta área sobre el cáncer de cérvix son muy deficitarios. Se requiere que la información sobre el cribado llegue a la población a través de múltiples canales: sanitarios, folletos, líneas telefónicas o páginas Web.

Abstract

Objective: To determine the knowledge of women about the screening of cervical cancer in the Healthcare Area of Ferrol. Methods: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study on a sample of 206 women, using a 10-item questionnaire on screening. Results: 38.8% answered that cervical cytology was used to diagnose cervical cancer. 59.2% have never received information about screening. 74.8% denied that cervical cancer could be caused by a sexually transmitted disease. The mean number of correct answers was 1.85. It was observed that having received information is related to knowing the usefulness of screening (p = 0.015) and to considering a 3-year interval between cytologies adequate (p = 0.000). Conclusions: The knowledge of women in this healthcare area about cervical cancer is very deficient. Screening information is required to reach the population through multiple channels: sanitaries, brochures, telephone lines or web pages.
