Abstract
Obesity is the accumulation of fat that can alter a person's health. Current epidemiological data show a significant increase in the child population worldwide and in Spain, highlighting the degree of epidemic highlighted by the World Health Organization. This justifies the research work on the knowledge of the subject to treat from a theoretical point, to support the practical actions in its prevention, diagnosis and treatment, therefore carrying out a control on this health disorder. Objective : The compilation and analysis of the causes and characteristics of childhood obesity. Systematize the activities and tasks of nursing professionals, both in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity. Methods : For scientific elaboration, the main databases were accessed, such as Medline, IBECS (Spanish Bibliographic Index in Health Sciences), LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences), TRIP (Turning Research Into Practice), National Guidelines Clearinghouse, CUIDEN, Enfispo, Dialnet and SciELO. Results : In order to achieve the above objectives, the pathogenesis associated with childhood obesity is described, focusing on energy balance and adipose tissue functions, which are modified in this symptom picture. The diagnostic methods used to account for body fat is the most used both in research and clinical diagnosis, although there is controversy in the definition of the cut-off point that differentiates obesity from overweight. The causes that generate the increase of fat in children are varied, although multifactorial obesity stands out due to its higher incidence and prevalence. The minor may develop health alterations that modify his growth, which are attempted to palliate through the prevention and treatment of fat gain. In the interventions, the role of nursing is highlighted through independent actions, such as health education focused on healthy habits, as it is the treatment and prevention par excellence in this age group. Conclusions : The current lines of research are more focused on the genetic aspects involved in the obese phenotype, since not all children exposed to environments with risk factors develop this increase in fat. Childhood obesity in aspects such as the causes and consequences for health is in a phase of expansion of knowledge. The consequences of childhood obesity in the short term are poorly developed compared to those of adulthood. Also, that Nursing has a very wide field of action to develop its independent part of its profession.
