Development of a checklist for the surgical patient information transfer to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit

Resumen

Objetivo: Evaluar la transferencia de información pre y post implementación de un checklist. Metodología: Se analizaron dos grupos, previo a la intervención y posterior a la intervención. A los 6 meses se realizó el seguimiento comparándolo con el posterior a la interven-ción. Resultados: El uso del checklist produjo una mejora en cuanto al número de ítems transferidos con una media total de 6,5 ítems antes de la intervención y de 7,3 de media tras la intervención. En el seguimiento se reportaron 0.47 ítems menos, pudiendo considerar que el número medio de ítems reportados era el mismo. En cuanto a la necesidad de clarificaciones disminuyó del 47% al 23% tras la intervención. Conclusión: El uso de un checklist mejora el número de ítems seleccionados como información relevante y mejora la nece-sidad de clarificar información posteriormente, asegurando una continuidad de cuidados.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the information transfer pre- and post-implementation of a checklist. Methods: Two groups were analysed previous and posterior to the intervention. Follow up was carried at six months. The findings were compared to that posterior intervention. Results: the use of the checklist produces an improvement in the number of items transferred, with a total media of 6,5 items before the implemen-tation and 7,3 of media post implementation of intervention. At the follow up 0,47 items were reported, being able then to consider that the number of reported items were the same. As to the clarification needs, decreased from the 47% to a 23% post intervention. Conclusions: the use of a checklist upturns the number of items selected us relevant information. Also decreases the need for posterior clarifying infor-mation, ensuring thus the continuity of care.
