Resumen

El abuso del mayor es un problema mundial de salud pública y de derechos humanos. Asociado con una mayor tasa de morbilidad y mortalidad, así como a un aumento en los costos de la atención, la responsabilidad de identificar el abuso en las personas mayores recae con frecuencia en los profesionales de salud. Dado que los mayores tienen más probabilidades de visitar a uno de estos profesionales que los individuos más jóvenes, las enfermeras tienen la oportunidad y la responsabilidad de identificar una situación de maltrato o de riesgo, pudiendo llevarse en muchos casos en su fase inicial. Este documento considera el tema del abuso de las personas mayores, y analiza cuestiones relacionadas con la comprensión, el reconocimiento, su detección y atención.

Abstract

Summary: Elder abuse is a global problem of public health and human rights. Associated with increased morbidity and mortality rate, as well as health care cost, the responsibility to identify abuse in the elderly often falls on health professionals. Given that older people are 2 to 3 more likely to visit one of these professionals than younger individuals, nurses have the opportunity and responsibility to identify a situation of abuse or risk, and in many cases can be carried out in their phase initial. This document considers the issue of elder abuse, and analyzes issues related to understanding, recognition, detection and attention.
